collage — 24”x 36”
gouache, tissue — 9”x 11”
These were experimental studies of self-portraits using atypical techniques and materials to capture different elements of my face. Using magazine clippings I focused on shading and showing the nuances in my skin tone and the texture of the pillow, as well as the movement in my hair. I used gouache with minimal water as well as ripped tissues to create texture in the second, more abstract portrait. This project helped me better understand my face and the different aspects of it through more experimental mediums and techniques, as well as approaching it from a different perspective. By forcing myself to use unconventional and unfamiliar materials, it liberated me from any imagined or expected outcomes.
